We believe you should know your rights when selecting a security company for your home and/or  business. Research and ask questions about the companies and the products offered.




   1. Verify online the alarm company, Alarm Company Operator, ACO, and Sales         Representative/Technician (Alarm Company Employee, ACE licenses: www2.dca.ca.gov)

   2. Research companies for fraudulent, adverse files or records. (Google, Angies list, and         Yahoo.)

   3. Get References.

   4. Consult with several security companies in order to make an informed decision in         choosing the right company for you.







   1. Communicate your needs to the Sales Representative so they understand your security         needs.



   2. Receive service from a licensed security company.



   3. Request a written proposal.



   4. Require clarification of service fees associated with special or “free” systems.



   5. Verify if you will own the system after the initial term or it remains the property of the         alarm company.



   6. Understand the contract, the proposed system, service expectations, and local false alarm         fees.



   7. Find out who will be responding to your alarm. Some cities do not respond to unidentified        alarms.




   8. Receive live emergency representative access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365        days a year.




   9. Question the installing Service Technicians’ experience, and if employees have been         drug screened and  background checked.




 10. Have your equipment tested in-house, prior to installation, to ensure proper operation.

   1.  Secure the perimeters of your business site. Make sure walls and gates are maintained          and secure.


   2.  Install a monitored security and/or camera system.


   3. Make sure all doors and windows are locked before leaving each day.


   4.  Keep your parking area well lit at night to deter intruders and ensure employee safety.          Additionally, consider installing motion sensor lighting.


   5. Deter intruders from roof access by strategically placed anti-climb paints or other anti-         scale barriers.


   6. If you are a retailer, design floor layout to provide adequate surveillance of stock. The         use of convex  mirrors and video surveillance are excellent deterrents.


   7. Consider internal doors fitted with keyless lock systems. Studies find that 30% of          business thefts and  burglaries are accomplished using a duplicate key. (Unauthorized          key duplicates can be made at most retail stores.)


   8. Security mark all computer equipment and bolt valuable items to desks.


    9. Phone lines should enter the building underground to protect their integrity. Install        wireless sensors or equipment.  Use a cellular service on your alarm system so your        phone line isn’t compromised.


 10. Join or start a business watch group with neighboring businesses.

        This is a great way to stay informed on risks in your local area and prevent crime.






  1. Install a commercial fire alarm monitored by a UL Listed Central Monitoring Station.


  2. Keep fire extinguishers readily available near potential fire sources (furnaces and       stoves).


  3. Post escape routes in every area of the building and clearly mark all fire exits.


  4. Make sure that each area has an alternative escape route in case the first is inaccessible.


  5. Hold practice drills regularly in order to familiarize staff with procedures for safely        exiting the building.


  6. Do not overload electrical circuits. Unplug items when they are not in use.


  7. In case of an actual fire situation, make sure your address can be seen by emergency        vehicles, and consider installing an exterior horn/strobe.

   1. Residential Intrusion/Burglar Alarm Security Tips.


   2. Keep your doors and windows locked then turn your alarm on.


   3. Keep all valuable items out of sight and store your jewelry and valuables in a safety         deposit box.


   4. Install proper lighting around your home and/or motion detector lights.


   5.  Start a Neighborhood Watch Program and report any suspicious people and/or activity in           your neighborhood.


   6. When you are out of town, have a trusted neighbor pick up your newspapers and mail         daily or have the post office and news carrier hold them for you.


   7. Engrave your property to deter theft and aid in the recovery of stolen property. Marking         your property provides a visual deterrence to theft as well as aiding law enforcement        agencies in the identification and  recovery of stolen property. Use your Driver's License        #, never your Social Security #. Engrave your property in a conspicuous place. Keep        good records of the  items marked and the location marked.


   8.  Set timers for lights and a television so it appears that someone is home while you are          traveling.  


   9.  Do not hide spare keys in obvious places such as: under doormats, in the mailbox, etc.          Give a key to a neighbor that you trust.


  10.  Whenever you move to a new home have the locks changed.


 12.  Sliders should have ventilation locks as well as auxiliary locks to bolster security.


 13.  Keep shrubs around your windows and doors trimmed to eliminate hiding places for          intruders.


 14.  Utilize sturdy, solid wood or metal doors at all entrances to your home.


 15.  Make sure that all exterior doors have well-made deadbolt locks.


 16. Install a wide-angle lens viewer in your front door to make it possible to see who is there         without having to open it.


 17. Have a security system installed and monitored for each point-of-entry. A security        system only works if it is armed. So, remember to set your alarm every night as well        as each time you're away from home.


 18.  Do not give out your alarm code to just anyone. Only a family member or trusted friend         should know the code in case of an emergency.






  1. Children should know their full name, address, and telephone number.


  2. Teach children how to dial 9-1-1 in case of an emergency.


  3.  Make sure children always tell a parent, guardian, or another trusted adult where they         are going.


  4. Tell them to never go with or accept anything from a stranger. Teach them that a        stranger is anyone that they or you do not know or trust.


  5. Let them know that it is okay to tell you or another trusted adult if they see anyone       doing something they know is not right or makes them feel uncomfortable.


  6. If your child stays home alone, make sure they know don’t let anyone know that they       are home alone.  Make sure they know to keep all the doors and windows closed and       locked.

  8. Prepare an emergency contact phone list. Make sure you include your work and/or cell        phone number.


  9. Prepare and practice a safe route to school.


10. Fingerprint your child and always have a recent photo of them.

  5. Help your child avoid things and people that are associated with violence


  6. If your child is a witness or a victim of violence, get counseling help immediately.





  


  1. Make sure the parking garage you visit is equipped with video surveillance equipment.


  2. Keep valuables out of plain sight, locked in the trunk of your vehicle if possible.


  3. Keep your doors locked and windows up as you drive through the facility.


  4. If possible, park in a well-lit area.


  5. Report any suspicious activity or persons to the parking attendant.


  6. Have your keys ready as you approach your vehicle.


  7. Be aware: look at the cars parked on either side of you, look underneath and inside your       car before you get in. If you are suspicious for any reason simply walk away and find       help.


  8. If you are unable to locate your car, don't be afraid to ask the parking attendant to assist        you.





  1. If you plan to work late or report early, try to arrange your schedule to coincide with       another employee's.


  2. Use caution when going into restrooms or stairwells.


  3. If you are working late, ask the security guard or a co-worker to escort you to your car.


  4. Lock your purse or wallet in a drawer or closet.


  5. Check the identification of any unknown person delivering packages or entering your        building.


  6. If you notice any suspicious persons or vehicles, call security or the police.


   7. Keep emergency numbers posted for local security, police, and fire or call 911.


  8. Make note of which co-workers could provide transportation or temporary shelter for        others in the event of an emergency.


  9. Never write down a safe or vault combination or a computer password.


10. Make sure your office has an emergency evacuation plan.


11. Have safe rooms available where people can go during an in-office emergency.


12. Ask employees to wear identification tags at all times.
